Trump Tells Federal Workers: Quit Now, Get Paid Until September

The Trump administration is incentivizing federal workers to resign from their positions, telling them they can still retain full pay for months, per NPR.

According to an email sent by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on Tuesday (January 28), federal workers have until February 6 to decide if they want to quit their jobs and still be paid in full and receive full benefits through September 30.

The email stated that employees who wish to accept the deal should reply from their government accounts with the word "Resign." The OPM said employees who resign would be put on administrative leave until their departure.

The memo also thanked those who seek to keep their posts, but noted, "At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency."

The "deferred resignation" is being offered to all full-time federal employees, except military personnel, employees of the U.S. Postal Service, those who hold positions related to immigration enforcement and national security, and those in any other positions specifically excluded by agency leadership.

Tuesday's memo comes after President Donald Trump signed an order directing federal workers to return to the office five days a week. Critics of the move say forcing federal workers back into the office full-time is part of a larger effort to push them to quit en masse to make way for Trump loyalists.
